RHU Amateurs’ Glasgow Colleges FA team extended their unbeaten start to the BOCA Championship campaign to six games on Saturday morning with a 3-1 win away to Croftpark – but they had to dig deep to do it.

The visitors produced a very disappointing first half performance in Maryhill against their bottom-of-the-table hosts, struggling to get a grip on the game early on - and in the first 30 minutes of the game had keeper Steve Lewis to thank in keeping them level after he produced a series of good stops.

After a bit of shuffling of positions, though, Rhu began to settle down and opened the scoring just after the half hour with Adams pouncing on a loose ball after it had skidded off the post from a Jack Young corner.

The celebrations didn't last long, however, as Croftpark drew level minutes later when a cross from the right was headed into the net.

In the interval the boys were given the instruction to control the game better than they had in the opening period, and they certainly took that to heart with a really good second 45 minutes.

Rhu took the lead just after the restart, Jordan Molloy leaping like a salmon at the back post to head in a Jack Young corner, and from then on the visitors managed to control the game and kept the chances for Croftpark to a minimum.

The game was finally settled when Ross Jeffrey netted from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining after he was upended in the box.

Manager Jamie Kjorstad was a frustrated but happy man at  full time.

“Not for the first time this season we have produced a poor first half and a strong second half,” he said.

“It would be nice to actually have a strong ninety minutes but in the end the result is the important thing.”

The result sees Rhu climb to fifth place in the table with three wins and three draws from their six games so far, tied with River Nevis on 12 points and four behind leaders Rossvale Huntershill.

Squad: Lewis, Wilson, Molloy, Brown, Burch, Black, Court, Shields, Scullion, Young, Jeffrey, Stevenson, Moy, McConnell, Adams.

Meanwhile, Rhu’s Caledonian League squad are awaiting news from officials after the late abandonment of their West of Scotland Cup tie against Lanarkshire United’s under-19s on Saturday.

Rhu were leading 3-2 going into the final minute of the match when the referee called an early end to proceedings due to the abusive behaviour of a spectator from the opposition.

This Saturday, September 28, it’s back to league business for Gordon Brodie’s men when they hit the road for a First Division fixture against a Stirling University side still searching for their first win of the season. Kick-off is at 2pm.

Rhu’s under-19s were also in West of Scotland Cup action on Saturday away to Glasgow Athletic, but found their SPAFA 19s Premiership opponents too tough a nut to crack, with the city side emerging as 3-1 winners.

The Rhu U19 squad return to league duty this weekend when they play host to East Park, looking for a measure of revenge after losing 3-2 away to the same opponents on September 14.
