RHU Amateurs’ Saturday morning side dug deep to chalk up their first win of the new Glasgow Colleges FA season on Saturday.
An own goal and strikes from Jack Young and Richard Henry saw Jamie Kjorstad’s men come from behind to earn a 3-1 Championship win over Glasgow Ansar at Ardenconnel Park.
Thanks to some great work by the club staff, the game was able to go ahead, although the conditions underfoot were not ideal, and it took a while for both teams to settle.
Chances were few and far between for both sides in the first half although it was the home side who were probably the most dominant of the two.
With no scoring at the interval, the message from the Rhu coaching team at half-time was to continue to push forward and press the visitors’ defence, but it was the Glasgow team who struck first: one minute into the half they found the net with a snap shot that took everyone by surprise.
With that jolt to the system spurring them on, the young Rhu side went about their business in trying to get back into the game, and managed to draw level after 57 minutes when a Scullion corner was knocked into the net by one of the Ansar defenders.
With their tails up now, the home side pushed on, and it was only good goalkeeping that kept them at bay, though ironically – if fortunately from Rhu’s point of view – it was an error from the Ansar keeper that brought the hosts their second goal when Young’s long-range shot skidded off the wet surface and squirmed under the goalie’s despairing dive.
In control of the game now, the home side made sure of the three points when Henry slammed the ball in from six yards after the ball fell kindly for him inside the area.
A delighted Kjorstad said afterwards: “It was a difficult game with the condition of the playing surface but the lads kept to the plan and were comfortable winners in the end.”
Squad: Court, Lewis, Scullion, Moy, K. Kjorstad, Adams, Henry, Brown, Burch, Young, Wilson, Milton, McConnell, Molloy, Jeffries, McKenna.
Meanwhile, it was another tough day at the office for Rhu’s Caledonian League squad on Saturday as they lost 6-3 at home to Stenhousemuir Community FC.
Gordon Brodie’s men should have been in action on Tuesday night, away to Glasgow University, but the match fell victim to the heavy rain earlier in the day.
This Saturday, August 31, the club’s Caledonian League side are hoping to put their poor recent run of form behind them when they play host to Alva Amateurs.
Kick-off at Ardenconnel Park is at 2pm.
Rhu’s over-35s stretched their unbeaten run to seven games when they cruised to a 6-1 win over Milngavie at Hermitage Academy on Friday night.
A devastating first 45 minutes saw the home side rack up five goals, with Andy Morrison and Stewart Fraser bagging a brace each and Jerry Packham also getting on the scoresheet.
The tempo dropped slightly in the second half but Rhu remained dominant, though they only had a Hugh Ward goal to show for their efforts after the interval.
Credit to Milngavie who never gave up and were rewarded with a goal for their efforts.
The win takes the local side into second position in Region 5 of the Football Central Over-35 League, and although the title is out of their reach, with MF Muirhouse having already made sure of top spot, they have a chance of cementing their position with a win away to Clyde Valley Rovers in the last game of the season on September 6.
This weekend’s Rhu footballing action kicks off on Friday night when the club’s under-19s play host to Greenock HSFP in the second round of the League Cup.
Kick-off at Hermitage Academy is at 8pm.
