THE moment of truth has arrived for Shandon sailor Anna Burnet as she prepares to go for Olympic glory.

The former Lomond School pupil and her partner John Gimson will line up in the Nacra 17 medal race in Marseille on Wednesday.

The pair had to wait until the fifth day of racing to bank their first race win – and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Light winds in the early afternoon on Tuesday prevented the flying Nacra 17s from taking off, but the Tokyo 2020 silver medallists held their nerve under mounting pressure.

They ended the day in the bronze medal position, tied on points with fourth-placed Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson of New Zealand, and  six points behind Argentinian pair Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco.

Burnet said: “I think in terms of the mental toughness we've had in a really difficult week to just keep chipping away, keep grinding away and doing what we do.

“We're really happy with that. It's not over yet. We'll keep fighting until the end.”

Gimson and Burnet said on day one they would have to play the long game, and they went into the penultimate day of racing in fourth, only ten points off second.

The duo ended day two sixth overall after six races, four points off the podium, matching their sixth-place finish after the regatta’s first three races on Saturday.

The race for gold is led by reigning Olympic and world champions Rugero Tita and Caterina Banti of Italy, who have finished first in six of the 12 races so far.

A ‘watch party’ will be held at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club in Rhu, where Burnet learned her craft, on Wednesday afternoon, with friends and family coming along to cheer on the British pair to what they all hope will be medal glory.
