THE Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club lifted the Commodores’ International Cup after a closely-contested four days of racing in home waters against Seawanhaka Corinthian YC of New York.
This biannual event has been taking place for the last 40 years in a variety of yachts, with the 2024 competition taking place in a 3v3 format in Sonars, and the races each day being worth an increasing number of points.
RNCYC took an early lead over the first two days to be on the maximum eight points, though with races on days three and four worth 1.5 and two points, the Seawanhaka team was prepared for aggressive racing to close the gap.
Despite Seawanhaka winning the first race on day three, RNCYC were able to maintain their advantage to set up only one race win needed on the final day.
Fickle wind forced the abandonment of two races on the final day, with the host club winning the only race which was able to be started and finished to confirm their overall victory.
Also sailed during this regatta was the Will Glen Trophy, in which the youngest member of the boat takes the helm, and the addition of a Masters race to celebrate the legacy of this regatta.
The Will Glen trophy was won by RNCYC’s Robbie Littlefield and the Masters race was won by Seawanhaka’s Peter Troxler.
A spokesperson said: “RNCYC would like to pay thanks to Seawanhaka Yacht Club, the race committee, Robin Young for the use of Glenafton as a committee vessel, supporters, and everyone involved in making this another memorable regatta.
“We look forward to returning to Long Island in 2026.”
The RNCYC team comprised Alasdair Ireland, Alison Morish, Nicole McPherson, Cameron Floyd, Griogair MacFarlane, David Fadipe, Eilidh Millar, Morna Millar, Linda Pender, Robbie Littlefield, Griogair Whyte and Hamish Taylor, while the
Seawanhaka team featured Al Constants, Dave Constants, Lisa Kennedy, Erick Rankin, Peter Troxler, Robert Troxler, Michael Obuchowski, Sophie DeLaCour, Avi Learman, Dani Learman, Robyn Philip-Norton and Gary Van Dis.
Meanwhile, the RNCYC’s bicentenary regatta is taking place on August 10 and 11.
It promises to be a great two-day event on the East Patch with windward-leeward sailing on the Saturday and a coastal race on the Sunday, and a Bicentenary Ball on Saturday evening in between the races.
The event is part of the Clyde Two Handed Series promoted by the Mudhook Yacht Club and all local club members are welcome.
