A STALWART of Helensburgh Hockey Club has ben selected to represent Scotland at the forthcoming Hockey Masters World Cup in New Zealand.
Barry Cox will compete in the men’s over-60 age group at the competition in Auckland, with his selection following on from a positive showing in Edinburgh.
Barry, the Helensburgh club's vice-president, was part of a Scotland side competing against Ireland in back-to-back full internationally recognised matches.
Scotland won both games, 5-0 and 4-2, with Barry scoring one goal and providing the assists for two others.
His training continues throughout the summer and into the upcoming hockey season, so that he can be fully prepared for whatever the tournament throws at him.
This year's tournament will be split between New Zealand and South Africa, with the over-60 competition being held at the Hational Hockey Centre NZ between November 7 and 16.
As a long time player, supporter and committee member, the club are rallying around to try and help support Barry on his journey.
Just to get selected, and now to get fit and ready for the tournament, is a big physical and time-consuming commitment, so the club is raising money on Barry's behalf to try and alleviate some of the financial burden he is incurring.
A tombola was held alongside the club's popular annual crockery smash stall at the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games on June 1.
The stall was very successful, and Sue, and the other helpers, would like to thank everyone who bought a ticket plus send an extra special thank you to all the local businesses who so generously donated gifts and prizes.
There were so many donations that some prizes that weren’t won on the day have also been included in a raffle and in several treasure hunts.
A Helensburgh Hockey Club spokesperson said: "Thank you to the following locals who so generously donated: Townhead Farm, La Jupe, Ardardan, Henry Bell, Helensburgh Co-Op, Tesco Express, Station Bar, Gordons Chemist, Capercaillie, Callaghan’s Butcher, Farmfoods, The Scandinavian Shop, Pet Shop, Peckhams, Asda, Riva, Riverhill, Shooftie, Boots, Tweedie, The Bottle Shop, Sugar Boat, Ellie’s Cellar, Helensburgh Leisure Centre, Helensburgh Toyota, Morrisons Local, Masala Twist, the Mandarin Chinese restaurant, the Clyde Bar, the Commodore Hotel, Card Factory, Eutopia, Rowlands Pharmacy, The Ashton, Annaya’s, Shopsmart, Pitter Patter Potter, Tesco Metro, The Journey, Morrisons, The Olde Christmas Shoppe, The Toy Shop, friends and residents of Albert Drive and last, but not least, other hockey club members."
