RHU Amateurs’ Caledonian League squad chalked up a 7-2 win at home to Vale of Leven Amateurs in their opening pre-season friendly match on Saturday.
Jordan Wyllie led the way with a hat-trick, while Drew McCann, Luke Evans, Lewis Campbell and Jack Flemming also found the net in a useful workout for Gordon Brodie’s men at Ardenconnel as they build up to the start of a new league campaign next month.
Flemming was one of three players in the Rhu squad for Saturday’s match, alongside Corey Livingstone and Marley Walsh, who made the step up from the club’s new under-19 squad to join the first team, with all three turning in impressive performances.
A spokesperson for the U19 squad said: “Well done to Corey, Marley and Jack on making that step up to play with the ‘Caley’ team.”
The next friendly fixture for the Rhu ‘Caley’ squad is away to Glasgow Wellington this Saturday, July 20, with further friendlies lined up against Vale of Leven Juniors at Millburn Park on Monday, July 22, at home to Dumbarton Accies on Saturday, July 27, and away to Oban Saints on Saturday, August 3.
Pre-season training, for both the Caledonian League and U19 squads, continues at Ardenconnel every Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30pm.
Anyone interested in making the step up to play Caledonian League football in 2024-25 is being asked to contact Gordon Brodie on 07711 120323, while more information about the U19 squad is available by contacting Ross on 07855 412188. The club’s U19 squad also enjoyed a useful workout in their own opening friendly match, against an experienced West Dumbarton AFC side, with Fraser Murray scoring Rhu’s goal in the 4-1 defeat.
Meanwhile, Rhu’s over-35s continued their winning run in the Football Central Over 35s’ League with a 2-0 victory over Inchinnan at Scotstoun Sports Centre, Stewart Fraser opening the scoring with a bullet header before a 25-yard screamer from Steven Conner doubled the visitors’ advantage before the break.
Next up for Rhu’s veterans is a home match against local rivals The Sons at Hermitage Academy on Friday, July 26.
Off the pitch, Rhu have put pen to paper on a major sponsorship deal with local businessman John Fraser, from DCF Joiners and Building Services, who will sponsor the home strips and matchday tracksuits for both the Caledonian League and U19 squads.
A Rhu spokesperson said: “This is another massive vote of confidence for what we are trying to achieve at the club, and everyone is delighted to have John and DCF on board.”
