A Helensburgh Tennis Club’s ladies team continued their great start to the season after two wins last week put them at the top of their division.
The ladies second team travelled to David Lloyd Hamilton for their first matches last week.
Third couple Fiona MacLaren and Barbara Gillies won three sets after first couple Alison Fotheringham and Jackie Hunter lost 1 – 2.
Janette Howieson and Fiona Beveridge also lost 1 – 2 in a close fought match.
Fiona MacLaren and Barbara Gillies were on winning form again on Thursday as they welcomed Titwood to the Helensburgh court on Suffolk Street.
Fiona and Barbara won three sets to zero with the loss of only four games and 1st couple Alison Fotheringham and Jackie Hunter won 6 – 4, 6 – 2, 6 – 2.
Jane Carroll and Janette Howieson narrowly lost their opening set 4 – 6 but came back to take the next 2 sets 6 – 4, 6 – 1 to achieve an 8 – 1 win.
The men’s first team were once again short of players with Keith Love and Bobby Kerr from the second team and Adam McLean from the third team stepping in.
Team captain Stephen Lewis was full of praise despite the team losing 3 – 6.
Felix Carpenter and Alan MacBeath at first couple just lost out on winning their opening set as they scored 6 – 7 in a tie break but they came back to take the next set 6 – 2.
In the third set the pair lost two vital service games and were defeated 3 – 6.
On court two, Stephen Lewis and Bobby Kerr took a while to get used to the very fast pace of both the courts and the opposition and lost the opening set 1 – 6.
They took the next set all the way to the tie break and had two sets points but failed to take them and lost the set 6 – 7.
The third set also went to a tie break, but the Helensburgh pair came out triumphant with Stephen’s powerful serves and Bobby’s sharp net play taking it 7 points to 4.
Third couple Keith Love and Adam McLean lost the first set 2 – 6 but a change of tactics saw them take the next set 6 – 3.
However, in the deciding set Keith and Adam unfortunately lost 3 – 6.
The ladies 60+ first team drew with Giffnock 3 – 3 and the ladies 60+ 2nd team lost 0 – 6 to Cambuslang.
The men’s 60+ first team also drew 3 – 3 with Giffnock.
