THE peak of the Grand Slam season for Gordon Reid may be a few months away yet, but the Helensburgh hero is still racking up the titles.
With their Australian Open triumph in January still fresh in their minds, Reid and his long-time doubles partner Alfie Hewett added a second Super Series title of the year to their impressive record at the weekend when they triumphed in the final of the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana – without dropping a set.
Having begun their bid to retain their 2023 crown with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the French pair of Geoffrey Jasiak and Olivier Langlois, the British duo reached the final by defeating Belgium’s Joachin Gerard and Martin de la Puente of Spain 6-4, 6-3.
That set them up for a repeat of their Australian Open doubles final against Japan’s Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda – and just as they’d done at Melbourne Park in January, Reid and Hewett triumphed in straight sets once again, this time winning 6-2, 6-2.
It was a particularly sweet win for Reid who’d seen his singles hopes snuffed out by Oda at the semi-final stage following a titanic tussle which saw the former Hermitage Academy pupil lose out 5-7, 7-6 (2), 3-6.
The doubles victory was one of three for British players in Louisiana, with Hewett cruising to victory in the singles without dropping a set after a 6-4, 6-4 win over Oda in the final, while Andy Lapthorne partnered the host nation’s David Wagner to victory in the quad doubles.
