HELENSBURGH Golf Club's Winter League participants have celebrated the conclusion of this year's tournament - and the end of an era for the competition - at the event's annual prize-giving.
The competition, sponsored by Tennent's, was played over eight weeks in October and November - sometimes in quite wet conditions - with the tournament coming to a successful climax on November 19.
The prize-giving evening combined good food, good humour and camaraderie with the presentation of prizes to the winners of the team and eclectic competitions.
The prizes, sponsored by Stevie's Drams, were awarded to the delighted winners by Ivor Jones - who has been 'Mr Winter League' at Helensburgh for the past 13 years and who, as recently reported in the Advertiser, has now handed over the organiser's reins to a new team for 2024.
Club professional Fraser Hall sponsored the very popular pro shop raffle, with some excellent prizes up for grabs, while the two guest speakers, Helensburgh's own Billy Green and Sheriff Lindsay Wood, ensured there was plenty to laugh about, with some delicious anecdotes from Lindsay about his life and times in the legal profession.
Ivor and his organising team of Crawford Howat, Angus MacDonald and Alan Latham have decided to call it a day after being in the chair, compiling and checking scores and producing the data each week, and in recognition of their dedication, each was presented with a luxury hamper featuring lots of very tempting goodies.
A club spokesperson said: "This is a wonderful advertisement for being part of a club where like minded people gather for friendships, forged over many years, and the competitive spirit is honed to perfection.
"A new management team is in the throes of formation and coming into being for next year."
The team prize was won by Brian Penman, Carl Powell, Alan Raleigh,Rob Prideaux, Dougie Singleton, James Mitchell, John Friel, Phil Armstrong, Alan Drysdale and David Kennedy, while the eclectic honours went to Tim Hughes and Don Griffin.
