THE opening of Helensburgh Bowling Club’s greens for the new season included a very special presentation to one of the club’s longest-serving members.
Jim McBride received honorary life membership of the club from president Liz Fraser in recognition of his 46 years as a member – during which he has served as club president, as secretary, president and honorary president of the Gareloch Bowling Association, and as president of the Dumbarton Bowling Association.
Jim was also one of the founding organisers of the Helensburgh and District Open Week and ran the tournament for many years.
Liz said: “No one has done more to promote the game of bowls in the area. However, it is his 23 years as secretary of Helensburgh Bowling Club and dedication he put into the job that more than merits this honour.”
With members and guests from the GBA, DBA and the West of Scotland Women’s Bowling Association watching, Liz’s niece, Rachel Mansfield, delivered the first jack and bowls of the new season, while immediate past president Roger Jones presented last season’s championship medals to Liz Fraser and George Sneddon, as well as winners’ medals to the Mixed A League, Ladies’ A League and Gents’ Senior League teams.
An 11-end game followed, with G. Steven, I. Wallace, J. Wilson and R. Begg the highest-up rink on the day.
