GEORGE SNEDDON won a record-breaking 10th Helensburgh Bowling Club gents’ championship this year – extending a remarkable run of success stretching back more than 50 years.
Sneddon won his first gents’ title in 1963 and repeated the feat a further eight times before lining up against Gordon Stephen in this year’s final.
Gordon had never won the title, and though he stayed in touch over the first 12 ends, George soon stretched away to win 21-8.
Gordon, however, gained some revenge the following day when the same two players lined up in the gents’ senior championship, opening up a 12-4 lead before going on to win 21-15.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Fraser celebrated a double triumph in both the main ladies’ final and the ladies’ senior final.
In the former Elizabeth seized control against Annette Christie right from the start and went on to win 21-8; in the latter she saw off the challenge of Helen Lawrie to complete a memorable double win.
Both the ladies’ and gents’ championships had new sponsors this year in the form of Investec.
