There was a home winner at Helensburgh Bowling Club’s open mixed fours competition as Alan Air’s team claimed the trophy.
On Sunday, October 8, ladies and gents from the Gareloch area and others from clubs as far afield as Clydebank and Alexandria gathered at Helensburgh BC to contest the popular event.
After the section games, which were played over six ends, the following rinks qualified to play each other in the finals, the results were as follows:
In the blue section, Jess McConnell, Lynn Dobroejivic, Alasdair Cameron and Gordon Stephen (skip), from Garelochhead and Helensburgh BC, qualified with eight points from a possible 10.
From the red section, Patricia McCallan, Marion McClenaghan, Robert Begg and Alan Air (skip), all of Helensburgh BC, qualified with a total of nine points out of 10.
In the yellow section, Jannette McKay, George Birss, Vick Smyth and Veronica Butler Hoskin (skip) from Barremman BC qualified in impressive fashion as they secured the maximum 10 points from their matches.
In the green section, Carol Laird, Sandra Watt, Vick Smyth and Tom McCabe (skip), from Clydebank BC, qualified with eight points from 10.
In the first semi-final, the Alan Air rink prevailed despite losing seven shots over the first two ends. They responded by scoring 2, 3, 3 and 2 shots in successive ends to reach the final, winning by 10 shots to seven.
In the second semi-final the Clydebank BC four, skipped by Tom McCabe, defeated the Barremman BC four.
In the final the Helensburgh four took the lead in the first end, scoring two shots before Tom McCabe and his rink tied the game by scoring two at the second end.
Burgh then scored three shots to again lead by five shots to two after three ends.
The Tom McCabe rink were not finished yet, responding with three shots over the next two ends to tie the game once again at five shots apiece.
But in the final end the Alan Air rink rallied to score two shots and win the trophy by seven shots to five.
Club president Patricia McCallan said: “I’d like to thank James Auld Funeral Directors for again sponsoring the event and Jim Auld for presenting the prizes.
“Also I’d like to give thanks to the caterers for providing us with excellent food and the organiser, Alan Howie, and his team for all their hard work.
“Congratulations to the players on an excellent day of bowling. thanked everyone in the club involved in organising the event for an excellent day.”
