THERE was more club finals at Helensburgh Bowls Club last week as George Sneddon, Keith Tait, Liz Fraser, Iain MacDonald, Marion McClenaghan and Jill Dacombe went home with the trophies.
The ties were played on Monday and Tuesday, George and Keith retained the gents pairs title, Liz and Iain won the mixed pairs while Marion and Jill won the ladies two bowl pairs.
The mixed pairs final was between Jill Dacombe and Allan Howie against Liz Fraser and Iain MacDonald. Liz and Iain opened the scoring with three singles before Jill and Allan added their first shot before Liz and Iain increased their lead to 7 shots to 2.
The pair went further ahead to lead 16 shots to 4 after 10 ends with some excellent bowls being played by both pairs. Jill and Allan added a single and a two to narrow the gap as Liz and Iain led 18 shots to 7 after 14 ends.
At this point the club floodlights became faulty and the Jill and Allan, given the score conceded the game to Liz and Iain.
On the same evening the reigning champions of the gents pairs, George Sneddon and Keith Tait, came up against Craig Stirling, a new member of the club, and Joe Cameron.
Craig and Joe started out better and held the early lead by 3 shots to 0 before the holders came on to their game and built up a 12 shots to 3 lead.
Craig and Joe rallied to reduce the deficit against them to 13 shots to 5 before the holders came back to make the score 17 shots to 6 in their favour. At this point this game was also affected by the floodlight failure and Craig and Joe, again given the score conceded the game and George and Keith retained their pairs title for 2015.
On Tuesday afternoon, Jill Dacombe, playing her fifth final, teamed up with Marion McClenaghan to face previous winners of the trophy Muriel Galt and Wilma Hanna in the ladies two bowl pairs final. Marion and Jill made it clear from the start they were up for this one as they raced into a 9 shots to 0 lead.
Muriel and Wilma made every effort to fight back but try what they may, they could never quite get into their stride as Marion and Jill were in great form they went on to achieve a comfortable victory to win the trophy.
That gave Jill a very well deserved first win in the finals this year
