On Saturday morning, round my way, there will be a meeting to contemplate the proposed next moves for our wee ferry to Gourock.
Except it’s not a new wee ferry so much as a ridiculously large boat – one of three planned as part of a triangular service between Kilcreggan, Gourock and Dunoon.
Quite clearly this kind of vessel was never contemplated with Kilcreggan in mind – in fact, folks on the Rosneath peninsula were only consulted after the meeting which drew up the proposals.
What makes this scheme more problematical, is that our lovely iconic pier wouldn’t suit the new vessel, or conform to easier access standards.
So there is a plan for a very long boarding pontoon and a breakwater leaving the original pier to languish between rare visits of the Waverley. Plus utterly altering the nature of the village.
Helensburgh folk know only too well what happens to neglected piers.
