In his latest column for the Advertiser, Helensburgh Central Councillor Ian MacQuire shares his opinion over the controversial waterfront development and provides updates on various group meetings.

I have been asked since I was elected as an SNP councillor in May 2022 - now an Independent councillor - for my opinion on what I think should go on the waterfront site.

I have never supported a supermarket taking over the site, and around 5,500 members of the public having signed a petition to oppose a supermarket. I believe the democratic opinion of the people should be heard.

Save the Tower

I fully support the Save The Tower group and their appeal to save The Tower Digital Arts Centre in Helensburgh.

I have had meetings and correspondence with council officers over moving the Comet Arch from an area in the Morrisons carpark to an area in Colquhoun Square where it can be seen and appreciated more by locals and visitors to Helensburgh.

Hopefully, this can be completed early in the New Year.

Update from Jean's Bothy

I had a meeting with the managers at Jean's Bothy and discussed ways of them raising funding, events that they could attend to promote mental health awareness, and ways of promoting online what they do and ways that they can help.

Jean's Bothy and Enable provide many weekly activities, including a walking group, diabetes and nutrition group, mindfulness, woodcraft, painting, crafts,  photography and more.

They are always looking for new members and helpers for the various groups.

They can be contacted by email at jeansbothy@enable.org.uk or by texting WhatsApp on 07542226390.

I have received several complaints in regards to the cleanliness and door operability of the Pier toilets.

I have also been advised that the parking meters in the Sinclair Street car park are often faulty. I will take all of these issues up with council officers.

The saga of having the silver bins removed is still ongoing.
