The Advertiser has invited General Election candidates standing to represent Argyll, Bute and South Lochaber to share their views on key topics to the area.

This week, Scottish LibDem candidate Alan Reid writes about his priorities for Helensburgh and Lomond.

We need to train and recruit far more GPs and dentists to work in the NHS, to give everybody the opportunity to see a GP and dentist within a reasonable time.

We should bring services back to the Vale of Leven Hospital and outpatient services back to the Victoria Integrated Care Centre in Helensburgh, to avoid patients having to travel long distances.

We would raise taxes on the banks, social media and tech giants, and other large companies to provide the money to enable the Scottish Government to spend more on the NHS.

We must stop global warming. This affects us all. We must meet the target of net zero carbon emissions by 2045.

We would impose a windfall tax on the big oil and gas companies and traders, and use the money to invest in renewable power and home insulation, reducing carbon emissions and bringing down energy bills.

The Royal Navy’s bases at Faslane and Coulport are a huge local employer. When I was the MP, I supported the successful campaign to base all the Navy’s submarines at Faslane.

As the local MP, I would campaign to maximise the jobs at these bases. One reason I don’t support Independence is it would mean the loss of nearly all these jobs.

Helensburgh will soon have only one bank. This remaining branch is clearly under threat too. I would table a bill in Parliament to stop banks closing branches where this would leave a town without a bank.
