PREVIOUSLY unseen mock-ups of Helensburgh's new waterfront supermarket have been revealed by campaigners trying to stop the plans.
The "indicative" designs for the site between the leisure centre and West Clyde Street were presented to councillors last week.
No mock-ups of the supermarket have been offered to the public by the council or their preferred developer, Forrest Group, since they named them in August.
And though the Co-op in Helensburgh has only said they are supportive of Forrest's bid, the images confirm it aims to move from its current Sinclair Street base.
Helensburgh Community Council (HCC) was passed the images contained in an official briefing to councillors.
They have been leading the backlash to the development, including collecting 5,000 petition signatures, applying for a judicial review of the decision, and drawing hundreds of people to a rally in opposition.
HCC said they also filed a freedom of information (FOI) request that found Argyll and Bute Council have spent £40,000 on consultants for the waterfront site so far.
The community has raised thousands of pounds to challenge Argyll and Bute Council's process over the waterfront. Permission is being sought from the Court of Session for a judicial review.
Dr Peter Brown, convener of Helensburgh Community Council said: "The people of Helensburgh and surrounding areas have expressed their opinion - strongly and clearly - that they do not want a supermarket on the waterfront site, most notably through the 5,000 signature petition.
"These new images of the proposed development will only cause further concern at the size and dominance of the building on this prime waterfront site.
"At a time when we know that Argyll and Bute Council are short of money, why has £40,000 been spent on external consultants to try to sell this site for a supermarket that the community is strongly against?
"Helensburgh Community Council remains open to engaging with Argyll and Bute Council to pause the development and reset the process for developing the waterfront so public opinion can be properly considered."
Argyll and Bute Council did not reply to a request for comment.
