PLANS to create a new commercial garage in Cardross have been unanimously agreed by councillors despite 13 objections from the public.

Gerald Biagi’s proposal for a site behind Viewfield, on the village’s Main Road, also attracted seven expressions of support along with one neutral representation.

The plans would see a change of use from a scrapyard, and were approved after a councillor was reassured on conditions for the disposal of waste oil.

The decision was made at a meeting of Argyll and Bute Council’s planning, protective services and licensing committee on Wednesday, November 20.

Councillor Fiona Howard (Labour, Helensburgh Central) said: “I did not see any mention of provisions for preventing things like pouring waste oil into drain systems, and for the keeping of gas cylinders. Is there anything about that?”

Planning officer Emma Jane responded: “There is a condition from environmental health with regards to waste storage. They have requested detailed specifications on containers used.”

A handling report in advance of the meeting also said: “The proposed site is located within a largely residential area within the village centre and as such, the impact of the proposed development on residential amenity is a key determining factor.

“In addition, the proposed development has been assessed more generally with regard to siting, scale, massing form, and detailed design in relation to the aim of respecting and reflecting the visual character of the built development pattern within the location.

“The proposal has also been assessed with regard to the satisfactory provision of services infrastructure provision.”

It also said: “Environmental health have been consulted on the proposals and have noted several safeguarding conditions that should be attached to any approval.”
