PLANS to turn part of a former care home which was slated by inspectors into two townhouses have been given the green light.

Argyll and Bute Council has approved the proposals for two four-bedroom homes with new vehicle access to be built within the former Clyde View Care Home, at Bloomhill, on the Carman Road.

The C-listed building is described in a report of handling as a Jacobethan Villa, dating back to 1838.

The care home was closed down in 2018 after the Care Inspectorate sought, and received, an emergency cancellation of its operating licence amid growing concern at the way it was being run.

The business’s owner, Reheela Khan, reportedly claimed staff had been “sleeping on the job”.

And three years later in August 2021, the 22-bedroom property was listed for sale with the Helensburgh branch of Clyde Property estate agents for offers over £575,000.

In 2019, the care home's owner, who was represented by Organic Architects, was given planning permission to turn the building into 10 flats with new car parking facilities.

In a report published alongside the latest application documents, a council official said: "The partial conversion from a 22-bedroom care home into two townhouses will retain a significant building which, at present, is vacant and at risk.

"The internal alterations, new extension, down takings of dilapidated sections and external alterations are sensitively designed and sited to protect the fabric of the listed building."

Seven months after the planning application was first submitted in April this year, it has been given the go-ahead with conditions in place for various landscaping and biodiversity works to take place.
