ARGYLL and Bute's only crematorium has been praised for its 'excellent service' after a recent inspection.

The Scottish Government’s Inspector for Crematoria conducted a thorough assessment of Cardross Crematorium, examining all aspects of the facility including cremation, grounds and memorials, service and staff, and the overall quality of the premises.

It was found that the crematorium operated to a high standard with no shortcomings in any area of the cremation process.

The grounds and Garden of Remembrance and administration process was also found to be of a high standard, while the public and private areas were considered in good repair.

An inspector commented that good practice was observed throughout, with noted attention to detail that ensured compliance with the instructions of the applicant.

The Scottish Government’s Inspector for Crematoria described the team at Cardross Crematorium as providing 'an excellent service to the local community and beyond'.

Councillor John Armour, policy lead for roads, transport and amenity services, said: "This latest inspection report is an excellent outcome.

"We have a relatively new team in place, and they are following in the footsteps of their predecessors in maintaining a high standard.

"Our congratulations go to them.

"We are always mindful that this service comes at one of the most difficult times in people’s lives.

"And so we are proud that we can be there, and relied on, to help people when they need it most."

This positive report follows a previous inspection in March last year, which was criticised by councillors for being 'picky'.

The previous audit, conducted by an inspector from the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities, gave the facility a high score of 411 out of 455.

However, the inspector criticised some aspects of the crematorium's service, including a 'conveyor belt' feeling to the flow of mourners.

The inspector also remarked that the standard of cleanliness was poor, but members of a key Argyll and Bute Council committee disagreed with that conclusion.
