A NEW youth club is being set up in Dunoon and could be up and running in the New Year, police have said.
Sergeant Sophie Marshall broke the news of Social 22 at a meeting of community figures in Bute and Cowal during a meeting.
The club has been set up as a result of the work on Planet Youth, who staged a community event in the town in September for residents to share views about the community.
The event was a collaboration between Argyll and Bute Council and NHS Highland, and was open to everybody playing a role in the lives of young people.
The news emerged during a meeting of the council’s Bute and Cowal community planning group on Tuesday, November 5.
Sergeant Marshall said: “Planet Youth in Dunoon is one of the main focuses, and they have done a power of work, conducting a survey on activities for young people.
“I have now had an email from [PC] Rachel Wells to say that a youth club in Dunoon is being established, and will hopefully open in the New Year.
“It will be called Social 22, and will be based in the food bank premises at 22 Kirk Street, hence the name.
“The committee will be voted in on Thursday (November 7), and young people are being invited to get involved in a competition to design a logo.
“So that is the key piece of news. It is something that we really needed in the area and Rachel is doing a lot of work on it in the background.”
Councillor Reeni Kennedy-Boyle (SNP, Isle of Bute), who was chairing the community planning group meeting, said: “That is brilliant news for Dunoon, and hopefully we can get the same for Bute as well.”
