PLANS to convert part of an existing outbuilding to residential accommodation on an estate near Dunoon have been approved by council chiefs.

The site north of Glenstriven House, at Toward, was the subject of Alistair Blyth’s application for partial refurbishment.

Argyll and Bute Council planning officers have now given the plans the go-ahead after no representations, expressing support or objection, were received from the public.

An officer said that the proposal was “a welcome addition to the area’s housing mix” in a report outlining the authority’s decision.

The officer said: “The proposal involves the conversion of part of an existing two-storey estate/office building to create a dwelling. The dwelling will contain three bedrooms and an open plan living/kitchen area.

“Given that the proposals are for a three-bed dwelling an additional two designated car parking spaces and turning area within the curtilage of the development will be required.

“Given that the ‘donor’ building also contains a one-bed dwelling a further two designated car parking spaces will be required making a total of four for this part of the development. As all works are to be internal there will be no modifications or alterations to the exterior of the building.

“The donor property contains another residential property. The orientation of the existing windows is such that there are no issues with overlooking and privacy in relation to existing residential dwellings within the block.

“The next closest residential property lies some 57 metres to the south namely Glenstriven House, as such there are no issues in relation to overlooking and privacy in relation to existing residential dwellings.”

The officer added: “The proposed development therefore offers a level interconnectivity with the surrounding area, allowing residents to meet daily needs and support the community despite being geographically remote.

“In addition, the applicant states that there are opportunities for employment at Glenstriven Estate and the intention is for the dwelling to support the operation of the estate. This means travel to employment opportunities for the occupier would be within 20 minutes.”
