The founder of a vital charity for the elderly in Helensburgh and Lomond has been honoured on the national stage.

Alison Gildea, who founded Grey Matters in 2012, was the guest of Jackie Baillie MSP as the Scottish Parliament marked 25 years this week.

Residents nominated local heroes to join the celebrations for the anniversary attended by King Charles.

Ms Baillie selected Alison from the shortlist as her guest and in recognition of the charity's work to tackle loneliness and isolation for the over-60s.

Through day trips and coach holidays and many other activities, they help older residents enjoy full lives.

The Dumbarton MSP also highlighted Alison's work during the pandemic lockdown with 'phone buddy' volunteers and securing funding for care packs.

Grey Matters also helped with shopping and collecting prescriptions, and they use tech clinics to help members keep up with the digital age.

Ms Baillie said: "I was absolutely delighted to be accompanied to celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament by Alison Gildea and her son, Fraser.

“Alison has been actively involved in charity and in improving the wellbeing of the area’s older population for many years and it was wonderful to have her company on such a significant occasion.

“I have had the honour of representing the people of Dumbarton, the Vale, Helensburgh and Lomond in the Scottish Parliament for 25 years and this was an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have dedicated their efforts to support our local community during that time.”

Holyrood's anniversary was marked by celebrations in the debating chamber together with performances by young people from across Scotland.
