A NEW trail run through Helensburgh has been hailed as a success after dozens of athletes took part in the inaugural event earlier this month.
Organised by Helensburgh Amateur Athletics Club, the Trident 10km on September 14 was new for this year and ended with Cambuslang Harriers athlete Alasdair Campbell in first place, finishing around five minutes ahead of David Mclure from Kilmarnock Harriers.
Race director Debbie Savage said: "We had a very successful event with our first Trident 10km and junior race, the ‘Duchess Dash’.
"From a final entry of 72 senior runners, we had 65 turn up on the day and all finished the run without incident.
"The winning time was an amazing 37 minutes with everyone completing the route within one hour and 22 minutes.
"Although it’s slightly short of 10km (at 9.7km) it has 1,250 feet of climb which is gruelling over such a short distance.
"The junior race was slightly less popular as it only attracted four young runners but all completed the two laps of Duchess Wood with ease."
Debbie added: "The coaches are, however, confident that it was worth organising and numbers will only increase if we run the event in future years.
"The rugby club was an excellent venue and provided coffee and bacon rolls for the runners post event which was very much appreciated."
The club's next road race, the Helensburgh 10k, will take place in May 2025.
