THE Advertiser made an appearance on national news and featured on the Paris Paralympics social media feed thanks to the family of a Helensburgh wheelchair tennis star.

Family and friends of Gordon Reid travelled from the town to the French capital to see his win with doubles partner Alfie Hewitt on September 6.

However, they took the opportunity to make the most of the Channel 4 livestream coverage - which is available on YouTube - by showcasing the excellent reporting of the athlete by holding up copies of the Helensburgh Advertiser.

The brilliant moment was even shared on the official Paralympics Instagram account.

As previously reported, the British pair ended their long wait for Paralympic doubles gold - the only accolade missing from their record-breaking honours list - with a dominant straight-sets win at Roland Garros.

The two-time silver medallists celebrated gold on Court Philippe-Chatrier after dispatching Japanese second seeds Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda 6-2 6-1.

It was success for the Britons, who are reigning Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon champions, and adds to the 21 grand slam doubles titles they have won together.

Gordon's cousin Sophie Reid told the Advertiser: "I was in Paris watching with pride at the Paralympics.

"Gordon’s fantastic friends came from Helensburgh to Paris and were an incredible support throughout. They brought an electric atmosphere, chants and songs which kept morale high at all times.

"We are beyond proud of Gordon for his achievement, obtaining the 'golden slam' with Alfie Hewett and remaining a true gentleman throughout. He’s our hero!"

On winning the title, Gordon said: "We finally did it, it's ours. It feels amazing, even if it's not fully sunk in yet, the emotions and adrenaline are still high.

"We've been desperate this for a long time, we've come close twice and felt that heartbreak and pain.

"Those matches have been some of the toughest moments of my career so sit here with the gold around our necks is one of the best feelings.

“Sometimes you need to feel some pain to enjoy the highs when they come, we need to really savour this moment.”

The team at the Helensburgh Advertiser would like to thank the family of Gordon Reid for including our paper in the special moment and say a huge congratulations for making our town proud.
