A NEW season of lectures organised by the Arts Society Lomond and Argyll (TASLA) gets under way in Helensburgh next week.
Lectures are held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Victoria Halls at 10.30am, with coffee available beforehand from 10am.
The first lecture will be held on Tuesday, September 10, when Ian Swankie will speak about 'The Classical Re-invented – The Brilliant Legacy Of Sir Christopher Wren'.
Wren was primarily a mathematician and astronomer and Ian's talk will look at how these disciplines are harnessed in his work.
It will also look at the origins of the classical orders of architecture and discover how Wren’s love of this ancient system is everywhere to be seen in his legacy.
Wren is best known for designing St Paul's Cathedral in London, though the world-famous building is one of 52 churches he or his team was responsible for rebuilding in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666.
His many other significant works include the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, Trinity College Library in Cambridge, and the façade of Hampton Court Palace.
All of TASLA's talks are open to members (free) and guests (£10) – visit tasla.org.uk to find out about membership and more details of the society's 2023-24 programme.
