Helensburgh's star Highland dancer has done it again and is over the moon at being top in the world.

Eilidh Gammons was named World Champion for the second year in a row at the Cowal Gathering at the weekend.

The 16-year-old is the town's first world champion and shone at the event amongst more than 900 dancers.

It was the 130th Cowal Gathering in Dunoon and thousands of people watched dancers, pipers, athletes and wrestlers, along with axe throwers and musicians.

But the dancers were the real stars, with competitors from Australia, Canada and the US competing with those from the UK.

Eilidh was crowned World Champion last year but has now moved up into an older category since turning 16 and took the crown again.

She also was the best Scottish Junior Dancer and the Scottish National championship.

Eilidh told the Advertiser: "It feels incredible to be able to call myself a two-times world champion.

"There is something special about being a world champion and I am so proud to be able to hold on to that feeling for another year.

"I am so happy with everything I have accomplished and am so incredibly grateful for all the amazing people in my life who made this possible.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to my amazing dance teacher Margaret MacInnes who puts in countless hours of work with me to help support me on my journey.

"I would also like to thank my family especially my sister Catriona and my mum - without you none of this would be possible."

Proud teacher Margaret, of Margaret Rose School of Dance, said: "This is a phenomenal achievement to win the world championship in two different age groups back to back.

"Eilidh has worked hard all year to stay at a world championship standard and I am so proud of her. The hard work starts now for next year."

The Argyllshire Highland Dancing competition, which was part of the Gathering, also saw Georgia Dow from Helensburgh taking top honours in the 7 and under 12 years Premier category.
