A NEW event that explored the origins of ferns at Geilston Garden proved to be a great success.
Friends of Geilston held a fern walk, led by experts from the British Pteridological Society on Saturday (August 17) which left all the participants with masses of new information to process.
The event provided a unique opportunity to learn about ferns, often overlooked in most gardens.
It started with an interesting session explaining how to differentiate between ferns by identifying features in their structure.
Armed with knowledge of fronds, pinnae, richis, stipe and sori, the group were led through the garden in Cardross to try their hands, with much support from the experts, at identifying many of the ferns in the garden.
And to finish the event, a group photo was taken of the Osmunda Regalis or Royal Fern just inside the walled garden.
A spokesperson from Friends of Geilston said: "We are indebted to the folks from the Pteridological Society who gave so freely of their time, expertise and enthusiasm."
