Police have issued a warning over scams relating to HMRC as the upcoming self-assessment deadline gets closer.

People have until July 31 to submit their self-assessment form, and officers are urging everyone to be aware of scam emails, texts and phone calls falsely claiming you owe money, or are due a tax rebate.

These messages often have a link that takes you to a malicious site, requesting your personal details or a payment.

Police are advising you that HMRC will not e-mail, text, phone or use social media to tell you that your are due a refund.

You should never click on links, provide details or payments to a cold caller, and if you are unsure if a message from HMRC is genuine, check at orlo.uk/rhTJi.

You can forward suspicious e-mails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk, forward suspicious texts to 60599, report suspicious phone calls at orlo.uk/Vtkg7 and report criminality to 101.
