HELENSBURGH’S silver bins could be on their way to Arrochar – but a council official has said they may be difficult to remove.

A councillor asked for an update on their removal since larger black bins were installed in the town more than a year ago.

And another councillor suggested they are moved to Arrochar, due to issues with rubbish accumulating in the village.

The discussion took place at a meeting of Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee on Tuesday, June 11.

Lomond North Conservative councillor Maurice Corry asked: “We have a problem with bins in Arrochar, and I would like to see if the silver bins being removed from Helensburgh could be relocated to Arrochar.

“If you contact the community council, they could tell you where they could be put.”

Council project manager Mark Calder responded: “It is certainly possible that we could have that discussion with the community council and we will see what we can do.”

Councillor Ian MacQuire (SNP, Helensburgh Central) then said: “As you are aware, for over a year I have been trying to get the silver bins taken away.

"I brought this up at the last environment, development and infrastructure committee meeting.

“Jim Smith [head of roads and infrastructure services] asked me to email himself and Kirsty Flanagan [executive director]. I did so and he asked me to bring it up at this meeting.

“He said that they will dig the silver bins out, because they have plenty of the same blocks at the depot.

"What are the costs and timings of this?”

Mr Calder said: “The silver bins were installed as part of the CHORD project, and the way they were installed does not make it straightforward.

“It is something we can look at, but it is not something we would ordinarily look to pick up through our area budget.”
