TWO hard-working volunteers from Helensburgh were celebrated as winners at a regional awards ceremony.

Last Thursday (June 6), the Gallery of Lorne Inn in Ardfern was abuzz with excitement as the Argyll and Bute Volunteer of the Years 2024, sponsored by Live Argyll, recognised the incredible contributions of volunteers from across the region.

The event, co-hosted by Takki Sulaiman, CEO of Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface (ABTSI), and Lauren Martin, ABTSI Business Manager, honoured local heroes who have dedicated their time and energy to their communities.

Michelle MacDonald has been volunteering for over 20 years with the Route 81 youth project in Garelochhead.

The charity provides a place for young people to meet, relax, develop, and enjoy a range of activities.

Michelle was awarded a regional hero for Helensburgh and Lomond, after being nominated by Dayna McAlpine, at awards.

And Simon Kershaw Yates was named as Volunteer Sports Coach of the Year after being nominated by Elizabeth Kershaw Yates, Nicole McMahon and Jane Watlin Smith.

The Helensburgh man has been a dedicated volunteers for seven years at his local swimming club, committing to the club 4-5 times per week.

Simon was unable to attend the event on the night but provided a thank you speech to be read out.

The event also featured a moving performance by the Forget Me Not Choir from Mid - Argyll, winners of the Volunteer Organisation of the Year, who delighted attendees with their rendition of "This Little Light of Mine."

Mr Sulaiman also introduced a new volunteer and employee assistance programme - which is free to TSI members.

He announced that Spectrum Life, an Irish company who already work with Highlands Council, UHI, Strathclyde University, and the Scottish Government, will deliver the service.

He said: "This initiative will support 1,700 people across our membership, both volunteers and employees. Some of those working in our sector will encounter the trauma of others or they may need support with their own life events.

"Spectrum Life will provide up to six counselling sessions per issue per person, a digital wellbeing app, live fitness classes, discounts, and advice on financial, debt, and legal matters. We are proud to be the first TSI in Scotland to offer this level of support."
