Plans have been revealed for a distillery to be built in the grounds of Inveraray Castle.

The Argyll Estates and the Stock Spirits Group, owners of Clan Campbell whisky, have proposed a significant investment of £25million in the construction of a Scotch malt whisky distillery at the historic seat of the Duke of Argyll.

The distillery is forecasted to bring more than 20 job opportunities to the local area once completed.

Clan Campbell whisky is a popular blend in France and other European markets, selling approximately 1.2 million nine- litre cases throughout the continent.

The new distillery's primary plan is to produce a single malt that could potentially be incorporated into the established Clan Campbell blend.

The project's development area spans 950 square metres within the castle grounds and would produce up to two million litres of alcohol each year.

In line with the planning application notification process, those residing locally will have a say in the establishment, being granted an opportunity to offer their viewpoints on the proposal.

A visitor centre is also part of the Inveraray Distillery plans, expected to draw further attention and footfall to the area, and thus generate at least 20 additional jobs for town residents.

The building process is expected to be environmentally friendly and utilise modern construction methods in partnership with local companies and suppliers, which ensures carbon neutrality from the get-go.

Pending planning permission approval, the construction of the distillery could begin as soon as the early months of 2025 and start producing spirits by 2027.

Torquhil Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell, expressed his anticipation for the project.

He said: "Inveraray Castle and Clan Campbell are inextricably linked, with the castle having been the Argyll family seat since the 15th century.

"To see Scotch whisky being distilled in the grounds will be a significant positive development – for the local community, for the castle and for Clan Campbell."

Jean-Christophe Coutures, chief executive of the Stock Spirits Group, agreed, stating: "Clan Campbell Scotch whisky is an iconic whisky brand that has established strong links with the Duke of Argyll.

"I am proud that our company has the opportunity to establish a distillery near Inveraray Castle."

He added: "Our state-of-the-art Inveraray Distillery will be equipped with the latest technologies, including those that are environmentally friendly.

"Its creation will also benefit the local community in the form of new jobs.

"We look forward to working with Argyll Estates on this next chapter in the Clan Campbell story."
