BIG crowds and glorious sunshine made sure the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games was a huge success on Saturday.
The combination of Highland dancing, athletics, the ever-popular heavy events, music from the Helensburgh Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band and a huge variety of community and trade stalls made for a memorable day out both for local residents and for those who flocked to the town from much further afield to enjoy the town’s annual celebration of Highland sport and culture.
The Games are renowned for attracting competitors not just from Helensburgh and Lomond but from far beyond, and this year’s event was no exception, with this year’s festivities including, for the first time, a programme of ladies’ heavy events, including the tossing of the caber, the hammer-throw and the tossing of a hay sheaf over the bar – all of them much tougher than they might look to those watching on!
A spokesperson for the Games said: “What a great day we had. Thanks to all our volunteers, helpers, the committee, our various competitors and traders who helped make this year’s Games another fabulous day for us all.
“Hope to see you next year on the first Saturday in June.”
