Helensburgh residents can find out all they need to know about how to vote in the upcoming UK General Election this summer.
With the UK General Election taking place on Thursday, July 4, voters have several important dates to bear in mind.
All voters must be registered first, and this can be done online in just a few minutes by visiting the UK Government’s website.
For the upcoming election, all voters must be registered before Tuesday, June 18 at 5pm.
Anyone who wants to vote in person in the UK General Election will need to bring photo ID to the polling station.
There are several different types of photo ID that you can use including a driving licence (full or provisional), a PASS card, a Blue Badge, a UK passport or a passport issued by an EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or a Commonwealth country.
If you don’t have any photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate instead – but this must be done before 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.
Voters can apply for the certificate at the Electoral Commission website and while registering voters must make sure to choose Scotland as their location.
If you’re away on Polling Day, or can’t get to a polling station in person, you still have other choices.
You can apply for a postal vote for this election before 5pm on Wednesday, June 19.
Another option is to request a proxy vote, where someone else goes to the polling station to vote on your behalf and for which the application deadline is 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.
To find out more about all the voting choices, register, and apply online, visit: www.gov.uk/vote-uk-election.
Details of all candidates (also known as the Notice of Poll) will be published on Argyll and Bute Council’s dedicated Elections web page following the conclusion of the nominations period on Friday, 7 June.
The council’s page will also contain information about all aspects of elections, details of polling stations, and more.
Those thinking of standing for election as candidates will need to submit nominations no later than 4pm on Friday, June 4.
