Members of a Helensburgh orchestra have lifted the lid on the group’s history and sense of community as they celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The Helensburgh Community Orchestra was established in 1984 to provide a space for pupils to hone their musical skills.

As time progressed so did the orchestra and now the group appeals to people of all ages – from adults who want to get back into playing to children who are improving their skills.

With no auditions required and no cost to join – as members are only required to own their instrument and be able to read music – the orchestra has created a welcoming space for people of all skill levels to work together.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

Orchestra member Janet said: “I hadn’t played in 45 years when I started with the orchestra.

“It doesn’t matter if you make a mistake because we all make mistakes.

“The socialising is really important, and we make a point of having a coffee and a chat.”

Conductor Moira Frize seconded this, and welcomed anyone who is interested to come along the orchestra which currently has 40 members aged from 10 to 90.

She added: “There’s no pressure. If parts are too difficult, I’ll just write easier parts.

“It’s a really good environment for people to come to play.”

The Helensburgh Community Orchestra has been holding a series of taster sessions to encourage more local musicians to get involved.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

Moira said: “We did it last year as a trial but this year it’s been even more successful.

“So far, we’ve got five new musicians which is really great.

“The adults help the children and it’s just really nice.

“People always talk to the kids and make sure they’re not left alone as well as helping them.”

The final taster session will take place on Saturday, May 25 in St Michael’s Church Hall from 10am to 12noon.

Entry costs £5 with all money raised going towards funding the orchestra.

The orchestra will also play during the Helensburgh Savoy Musical Theatre Group’s Variety at the Vic show.

The charity concert will showcase local performers of all kinds and will take place on Friday, May 31 at 7.30pm with tickets costing £8.
