THE 1960s left so many welcome legacies - music, greater ease of travel and social change, to name but three - that it's easy to forget that not everything that burst into our lives 60 years ago left a welcome footprint.
Take domestic architecture, for example: flat roofs, tower blocks and building materials that weren't exactly devised with a long lifespan in mind don't always have people thinking back to those days with a great deal of fondness.
Happily, though, there's a much more positive 1960s building legacy to be found at our latest property of the week: Whistlers Burn in Rhu.
While the original house was indeed built in that milestone decade, since then it has been significantly modernised, upgraded and extended - and now it's looking for its next owner.
On sale through the Helensburgh office of estate agents Clyde Property, who are seeking offers of more than £609,000, Whistlers Burn features five bedrooms and four social rooms.
Entering through the front door leads to the reception hall which gives access to the family room and sitting room.
The family room is spacious and has French doors opening out to the front garden’s patio area, showcasing views of the Gare Loch and letting in natural light.
Next to the family room is the sitting room which has doors giving access to the back garden and in between both rooms is a w/c.
Some stairs off the reception hall lead up to an upper ground floor where the large dining room can be found.
This room contains two full height windows which look onto the loch.
On this level there is also a breakfasting kitchen which features a range of units and appliances as well as a central island.
From here, a door leads to the rear hall which contains a w/c, a large utility and boiler room, and gives access to the back garden.
Stairs from the dining room lead to the upper floor which opens into an open plan living room with high ceilings, large windows, and a wood burning stove.
The living room gives access to two bedrooms, including the principal bedroom, which both have ensuite bathrooms.
The principal bedroom has a cathedral style ceiling, feature windows, a well sized ensuite bathroom with a bath, walk-in shower, w/c, and wash basin, and a private balcony overlooking the gardens and loch.
The home’s other three bedrooms are found off a hallway to the other side of the living room.
All are double rooms with built-in wardrobes, and they are served by a family bathroom with three-piece suite.
Outside, the front garden contains a large lawned area, patio spaces, and bedded plants.
A long gravel driveway which leads through the garden and up to the house and double garage which has an upper room which is ideal for usage as a home office, studio, or gym.
Additional parking is available to the front and side of the house.
A World War II Anderson shelter is still accessible and can be found within one of the bedded borders.
The rear garden features a large patio area and several bedded areas with vibrant plants.
Estate agents Clyde Property said: “Originally built in the 1960s, Whistlers Burn has been substantially extended, modernised, and redeveloped over the years and is now a magnificent, modern and completely unique family home that extends to over 3000 square feet.
“The interior of the property is thoughtfully planned out and offers a very versatile layout, suitable for the larger family.
“Many of the rooms enjoy water views to the front and the contemporary high-end specification throughout is exceptional.
“The house sits well back from Gareloch Road and takes in lovely views over the waters of the Gare Loch.”
