THE fruits – and flowers, and vegetables – of months of painstaking work by gardeners across Helensburgh and Lomond were put on show at the Victoria Halls in September...and the organisers pronounced themselves delighted at the results. The Helensburgh and Gareloch Horticultural Society’s annual show has been a favourite fixture of the local events calendar for many years, with this year’s event being the 171st since the society was founded in 1850 - with only the two world wars and the Covid pandemic having interrupted it since then. THE curtain fell in September on another summer of live musical entertainment at Geilston Garden in Cardross. Members of the Helensburgh-based ladies’ a capella choir Tartan Harmony made sure there was plenty of song in the air when they performed at the final ‘Sunday in the Garden’ event for 2023 at the popular visitor attraction, with Robin Smith and Matthew Morrison Smith among the audience enjoying the sound of music and the sunshine. Pet owners in Helensburgh and Lomond paid tribute to a much-loved local vet as she prepared to say goodbye to Helensburgh for pastures new. Karen Murphy spoke to the Advertiser about her 16 years working at Lomond Vets in the town, and some of the pets she’d cared for – while there was no shortage of owners queuing up to wish Karen well. Among them was local resident Jackie Hood, who chronicled the adventures of George the Helensburgh Cat - owned by Jackie’s parents, Elizabeth and Dennis Royal - for two memorable years on Facebook until the adventurous feline died in September 2021. Ashley and Gemma Carter with their pet dog Mya at Loch Lomond Shores' latest Top Dogs Day Out in October. The festival featured a dog show, massage and grooming services, puppy training and nutrition advice and much more. More than £400 raised from entry fees to the event's dog show was donated to the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat. (Image: Freelancer)
HELENSBURGH residents honoured veterans who lost their lives serving with the armed forces at the town’s Remembrance Day service. On the morning of Sunday, November 12, members of the public, military, and local government attended a service at Hermitage Park led by the Reverend Dom Ind of St Michael and All Angels Church in Helensburgh. The Helensburgh Winter Festival was graced – if that’s the word – by the worst weather in the history of the event in December. But that didn’t stop participants enjoying a fantastic weekend of festive fun. This year’s event took place on a different date to those of the past and formed part of the Helensburgh – A Christmas Town initiative, aimed at making the town the number one destination for people in the west of Scotland looking to soak up some of the spirit of the season. On day one of the event we spotted several Santas limbering up for the start of the Santa Dash - the annual charity race forming part of the weekend's events, organised by the Helensburgh and District Round Table.
