Today we're taking a look back at some of our favourite pictures from the Advertiser during 2023 - this time concentrating on those long, and even occasionally sunny, days of May, June, July and August.

A band of intrepid helpers joined forces to make sure Helensburgh was still looking at its best after the Coronation in May. The Lomond Rotary litter pickers shrugged off some thoroughly dreich weather to fill almost a dozen bags with litter collected from the town centre’s streets as part of the Coronation’s Big Help Out initiative. The clean-up was organised by Rotarian Colin Shannon, who roped in five of his clubmates and six members of his own family to lend a hand. (Image: Brian Averell)
The Rhu and Shandon Gala made a long-awaited return to the local events calendar in June. After a three-year absence, the Gala Day enjoyed a gloriously sunny return, featuring dozens of groups and businessses, competitions such as dog show and tug of war, and plenty of music and fun. The event was hosted at HMNB Clyde’s Ardenconnel sports pitch after a stellar effort from a brand new group of volunteers to bring everything together. (Image: Freelancer)
In June we told the story of how Helensburgh man Paul Cox had set sail on his maiden voyage – on board a boat he built himself from scrap wood picked up during walks on the beach. Paul, 70, built the small but sturdy ‘Tickety-Boo’ over the course of nine months, and was joined by neighbour and fellow boat enthusiast Paul Hunter on an hour-long journey on the waters around Helensburgh to mark the very special occasion. Supporters of the Jean’s Bothy community mental health hub in Helensburgh gave the project a welcome boost – and got rid of plenty of unwanted items from their homes – at a car boot sale at Colgrain Bowling Club in July. Wet weather forced the organisers to bring the event indoors but that didn’t stop 23 enthusiastic sellers – and dozens of equally keen bargain hunters – turning out to give the event, and Jean’s Bothy, their backing. Summer sun may have been somewhat limited in Helensburgh and Lomond – but there was no shortage of summer fun at the Route 81 youth project in Garelochhead. In August we lifted the lid on the initiative’s summer activities programme by publishing photos of bubble football, a trip to the Foxlake Adventures water park in Dunbar (above), team building and target practice at The Worx Airsoft, and kayaking with Paddle Power and Adventure. In August we caught up with Helensburgh powerlifter Chris Martin after he set a new British, European and world record in the sport. Chris, 46, has been a competitive powerlifter for more than 20 years and attended the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association (BDFPA) Men’s National championships on August 12 and 13 in Brandon, Suffolk. Chris, who coaches part time at The Journey in Helensburgh, competed in the under 110kg category and completed the three disciplines of squat, bench press and deadlift. (Image: Chris Martin)
