AN EXPERT physiologist will be visiting Helensburgh to deliver an exclusive talk on staying healthy and living longer.
Professor Ron Baxendale from the University of Glasgow will be giving his talk, ‘Delivering Healthy Ageing’ to members of the Helensburgh and Lomond branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A).
The talk takes place on Friday, December 8 at 11am in Helensburgh Parish Church halls.
A spokesperson for the group said: “It is easy to find a lot of advice about staying healthy and how best to cope with a range of illness.
“It is not always easy to sort out advice based on strong scientific evidence from less securely based opinions and even folklore.
“None of this really addresses the basic questions about how fast we are and what we might do to slow the process, stay healthier, and possibly live longer.
“The speaker will explain what current knowledge is and how we might adjust what we do to achieve healthy ageing.”
Professor Baxendale teaches human physiology at the School of Medicine at the University of Glasgow.
During his career he served as the head of the Human Biological Sciences from 2011 to 2018 and has worked on a range of research projects investigating arthritis, muscle wasting, diets, exercise, and rehabilitation.
He continues to teach a wide range of courses in life sciences and medicine at the university and has worked on several outreach projects to engage the public and widen scientific understanding.
The meeting is open to all U3A members with attendees required to pay a £2 entry charge towards the cost of room hire and coffee available for free from 10.40am.
The U3A is a UK-wide collection of over 1,000 charities whose activities are generally aimed at retired or semi-retired people who wish to share in recreational, creative, or learning activities.
There are more than 430,000 members across the UK – with the Helensburgh branch having more than 220 locals signed up - who have access to exclusive talks and events.
Membership of the Helensburgh and Lomond branch costs £20 for individuals and £38 for couples.
