Rhu residents are invited to join in on the festive fun at the village’s Christmas lights switch-on next week.

The event - organised by Rhu and Shandon Community Council - will take place on Friday, December 1 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Rhu village green.

The Christmas tree lights will be switched on by special guests Santa Claus, his assistant elves, and Rhu Primary School children at 7pm.

A community council spokesperson said: "Our switch-on show is a special occasion and a great way to kick off Christmas.

“It’s one of the highlights of the year, seeing families and friends gather to celebrate the start of the festive season at the heart of our community.

“So, wrap yourself up well and be certain to come and join-in on all of what’s happening around Rhu Village on December 1.”

Attendees will be able to enjoy live music, dancing elves, a children’s dance competition, a children’s Chair-O-Plane ride, and a lucky hammer stall, with The Olde Christmas Shoppe in Helensburgh providing festive goodies.

There will also be food and drinks available with a candy floss stall, free hot chocolate provided by Rhu and Shandon Parish Church, and the Cafe at Kilcreggan’s Hog Roast team.

Santa’s Grotto will also be there for children under eight with experiences made for children zero to three, three to five, and five to eight - each costing £3.00 per child.

The community council is organising the event in partnership with the Beano Disco Group.

Also occurring on Friday, December 1 is the Rhu Christmas Events Day, where community groups are coming together to host a series of festive activities.

Rhu Primary School parent’s group are holding a Christmas fair with a wide range of activities, including a Christmas jumper swap, children’s games, and mulled wine and mince pies within Rhu and Shandon Parish Church Hall from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

Afterwards, the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club will be opening their bar and offering the public free mulled wine and mince pies from 4.30pm 6.30pm.

At the end of the lights switch-on, the Rhu Inn will be hosting a Christmas Party Night from 8.30pm.

The day is sponsored by a variety of groups including Anderson Engineering, Argyll and Bute Council, the Ministry of Defence, Babcock International, The Olde Christmas Shoppe, Morrisons Supermarket, and Helensburgh Toy Shop.

The community took on the organisation of the Christmas display after Argyll and Bute Council decided some years ago to step back from the provision of Christmas trees and lights - not just in Rhu, or Helensburgh and Lomond, but across the whole council area - as a cost-saving measure.
