Helensburgh residents will have a chance to learn about an explorer’s journey through the birthplace of one of the world’s first civilisations.
Writer, broadcaster, and explorer Leon McCarron will share stories from his boat journey along the full length of the Tigris River at an event in the Victoria Halls.
After travelling through Turkey, Syria and Iraq – where ancient civilisation Mesopotamia was once located - Leon will open up about relying on the kindness of strangers, his experience with militias, and why the river is important to the world.
Leon said: “It's really exciting to be returning to speak for the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, and to share the journey that our team made along the river Tigris.
“It is a part of the world with such an important and deep history, but also one on the brink of an environmental catastrophe.
“I'm looking forward to sharing stories of both the challenges and hope that we found in Turkey, Syria and Iraq.”
The event on Thursday, October 26 is part of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s [RSGS] current season of Inspiring People talks.
RSGS chief executive Mike Robinson said: “We are delighted to have Leon McCarron speaking for our Inspiring People talks programme this year.
“This is an area of the world that has been in the news for all the worst reasons, so it’s refreshing to hear of Leon’s many insights and adventures in this often-overlooked region.”
Leon's talk begins at 7.30pm.
He is also speaking in Dumfries, Galashiels, Ayr during the week starting Monday, October 23.
RSGS Inspiring People talks are open to all with tickets and are free for RSGS Members, students and under 18s while they cost £10 for general admission.
Tickets are available to book online in advance at www.rsgs.org/events and are available at the door for cash only.
