A POPULAR charity swimming event will return to Helensburgh for the first time in five years – with organisers urging residents to join.
The Christian Aid sponsored swim will be held in the Helensburgh Leisure Centre on Thursday, September 14 between 6pm and 8.30pm, and will help raise funds for the charity.
Having raised thousands of pounds for Christian Aid in previous years, the swim hasn't happened since 2018 for a variety of reasons, such as the Covid-19 lockdown and the construction of the new leisure centre.
A spokesperson said: “It used to be a huge event, raising thousands of pounds for Christian Aid.
“It was also great for those who took part as they achieved their personal best for the number of lengths swum.
“The atmosphere at the event really encourages people to keep going and achieve more than they expected.
“However, due to Covid and the leisure centre build, the event has not been held for a few years.
“Now it is back, but we only have a few weeks to get the word out about what a great event this is.
“We want swimmers of all ages, from eight to 80 plus.
“Pick up a sponsor form and raise some money for a great cause.
“All sponsor money will be collected at Helensburgh Parish Church a few weeks after the event.”
Swimmers of all ages are welcome but need to be able to swim at least a length without holding onto the poolside.
Counters will be present at the end of each lane to keep track of the number of lengths participants swim.
Sponsor forms are available from local schools and the Helensburgh Leisure Centre.
Established in 1945, Christian Aid is a global charity that aims to eradicate poverty and provide humanitarian relief and long-term development support to disadvantaged communities around the world.
