MSP Pam Gosal has praised Rhu and Shandon’s Edible Garden for giving a “boost” to locals’ wellbeing after a visit earlier this week.
The West Scotland region MSP took a trip to the garden at the local community hall on Thursday, August 10 to see the work the 12-person team do for residents.
The garden was made possible thanks to receiving £42,284 from the National Lottery Community Fund.
During her visit, Ms Gosal also presented the team with a motion she submitted to the Scottish Parliament to congratulate the team on being awarded the funding.
West Scotland MSP Pam Gosal said: “It was fantastic to visit this new community initiative which has been made possible thanks to National Lottery funding.
“This project will not only provide education opportunities for young people but will also boost the physical and mental wellbeing of all those who attend.
“I wish all those involved with the project the best of luck as they continue this work into the future – especially with the various classes and community meal sessions.”
From its opening in February 2023, the garden has provided free access to fresh, locally grown produce as well as volunteering opportunities for people of all ages.
Educational opportunities for young people are also available, with children from two local primary schools set to visit the garden during the new school year.
Chairperson of the garden, Sue Thornley, said: “The project started in February 2023 and is going well.
“More folk are now interested in visiting us, classes for children will be starting soon, and the men’s group have done a fantastic job in creating a polytunnel.
“The main aims for creating the project were to bring residents out of isolation and improve their mental health and wellbeing.
“Many new friendships are being formed which is delightful.”
Recently, the site built a polytunnel - a steel framed tunnel with a polythene cover - where more fruits, vegetables, salads, and herbs can be grown.
Tomatoes, gherkins, beetroot, pumpkin, redcurrants, gooseberries, red cabbage, cucumber, kale, chard, onions, broad beans, lettuce, strawberries, leeks, and spinach are all being cultivated in the new build.
