HELENBURGH'S West End stage star has offered some advice for young people who aspire to get on stage as he did.

Reuben Joseph shared his thoughts on Instagram after finishing his year in the title role of the smash hit musical Hamilton last month.

He will play Macbeth for the Royal Shakespeare Company next but addressed his comments to the "boy from Helensburgh".

Reuben said theatre was hard work but there were "moments" of joy that could drive you on more than anything.

His post included video clips of the end of the show with cast celebrating to thundering audience applause.

Reuben wrote: "Some advice for the boy from Helensburgh at the back of the stalls.

"You might not be from Helensburgh or a boy or at the back of the stalls, but you're sat where I was at five years ago when I first came to see this show.

"And [the] thing you'll want to know right now is how? How do I get on that stage? How do I get to play with these artists?

"Cause the hardest part is starting.

"But if I can take part in something like I saw tonight, I'll never have to work a day in my life. And I'm afraid it's all a lie.

"This is hard work. It's something I've surmised by watching these guys. In the same way we don't fully know what brought the audience here, the ingredients of this show, any show, are bood, sweat and tears. So don't ask yourself how, ask yourself why? Why would you work in this profession that's consistently got you stressin', insisting it's the best when all does is do your head in? After all, it's the life that you have chosen."

He continued: "You do this for the moments.

"One or two in a day which are enough to sustain and chase any semblance of sorrow away.

"The way in which you hit your mark and it kickstarts the dopamine. Or the part in which a certain scene lands unexpected, differently. A delivery accidentally fumbled and you mumble your way back into rhythm. When you see your castmate giving something extra and that helps ya bring something new.

"The tunes played and shared in a dressing room. The routines and the silly s**t you do backstage. The card games and in-jokes with folks who you barely used to know who've grown into unexpected friends. Ending nights with a pint in the pub. Brothers and sisters that you love. Just one of these moments would be enough to make sense of this. There are so many moments I'm going to miss.

"So, boy at the back of the stalls, that's the why. That's all there is. No tricks, no ploy. Dall in love with your company and they'll give you joy."
