COMMUNITY councillors in Rhu and Shandon have urged members of the public to have their say on a masterplan for Rhu Marina at an event in the village next week.

The proposals from the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club (RNCYC) will go on display at the club’s existing premises on Thursday, June 1.

As previously reported in the Advertiser, the club is hoping to move to a new base on land it owns at Rhu Marina – and has warned that if its plans don’t get the green light, the club could cease to exist.

Members of Rhu and Shandon Community Council (RSCC) will be at the event to survey the views of members of the public.

The community council’s convener, John McGall, said masterplans were “an unusual occurrence in any community”.

He added: “The one for Rhu Marina is a particularly complex one as there are two distinct owners of the site, the Crown Estate and the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, each owning their own distinct area.

“There is also the operator of the marina, Boat Folk. We therefore fully appreciate the challenge of attempting to pull together a coherent masterplan for the whole of the marina site.

“That is why the community council is pleased that the RNCYC is holding the event to display and discuss details of the masterplan to the local community.

“It should provide awareness of each of the three phases of the proposed plan, the new clubhouse for the RNCYC, the redevelopment suggestions for the existing marina facilities, and the expansion of the marina site by infill of the shoreline to the west of the existing land.

“The community council will be in attendance at the event to survey community response to the proposals.

“Any proposals for development at Rhu Marina, which is at the heart of the village and of interest to the wider community, is of major importance.

"Rhu and Shandon Community Council appreciates the RNCYC hosting this event and we hope for a good turnout of residents from a the surrounding area.”

The public event next Thursday at the RNCYC clubhouse runs from 6pm until 9pm.
