THE former site of a Helensburgh hardware store could become a food and drink outlet under plans submitted to council chiefs.

Dumbarton man Graeme Shearer has submitted the application to Argyll and Bute Council for the premises at 64-66 West Princes Street, formerly the premises of Helensburgh Tech and Hardware.

The shop has now moved to new premises next door, and Mr Shearer now wants to turn the former store into a coffee shop or café.

A decision from council planning officers is expected by late June, and comments on the proposal can now be submitted by the public.

In a supporting document, planning agents Technique Architecture and Design said: “The unit has been marketed as a class one retail unit for 10 months prior to this application, with no interest.

“The development aims to reinvigorate a key unit adjacent to an important public square within the town centre.

“The proposal to change the use of the unit to class three (food/drink) meets the guidance within Policy LDP 7 as the development looks to maintain and enhance the vitality and viability of established town centre.

“Similarly, Policy SG LDP RET 1 of the adopted supplementary guidance states that there will be a presumption in favour of retail development (use classes 1, 2 and 3) when the site is within a defined town centre.

“The proposed installation and positioning of the flue to the rear of the property is consistent within the guidance provided within policy LDP 3.

“The proposal will have no adverse impact upon the character or appearance of the conservation area and will have no adverse impact on the adjacent residencies. On the basis stated above we would assume that the proposals would be acceptable.”
