The Tower Cinema has thanked the community for their “overwhelming” support after it reported a rise in popularity.

The cinema, based in The Tower Digital Arts Centre, has reported selling out screenings of the Super Mario Bros Movie twice a day and has said its National Theatre and MET Opera showings continue to sell well.

With earnings up, the cinema's future is now looking positive after staff recently feared that the venue could face closure earlier this month.

After the sudden rise in numbers, the small team has been amazed by the sense of community and has urged customers to continue visiting over the summer as the cinema’s future remains uncertain.

Donna Hicks, of the cinema, said: “We met lots of people who, despite living in Helensburgh, came to The Tower for the very first time.

“The sense of community spirit was overwhelming and a massive boost to the volunteers and staff.

“I think word is getting out that we're not overpriced (tickets and shop) and that what we offer at The Tower is a unique experience.

“The income from our shop is crucial so we really appreciate each sale - we just need to focus on trying to keep that momentum going.

“What we need now is for continued support from our wonderful community - as the weather improves, attendance at cinemas tends to fall.

“Who can blame anyone for wanting to spend time in the sunshine, but please remember we are here for the public and need to be selling tickets regardless of the weather.”

The team also appreciates the patronage of Jean's Bothy, the Stroke Club and the Autism Group who have had private screenings in the cinema.

It is also grateful to their mature Silver Screener guests who regularly come to see showings of classic movies every Tuesday and Thursday.

Sales from the sweet shop and bar are also helping the venue’s success as the cheap drinks and sweets starting from 75p and snack boxes for £4 have attracted many customers.

Aside from helping keep the cinema afloat, the rise in customers has contributed towards the new 20 seat screen that the venue hopes to open.

However, more funds are still needed and the cinema urges anyone who wants to advertise with the cinema or sponsor the project to get in touch.

Donna added: “We are working towards opening our newest screen which will seat 20 guests, all on sofas and comfy chairs.

“We are nearly there but would love to hear from any company or individual who may be willing to sponsor the completion of this project or would be interested in on-screen advertising.

“Thanks to the fantastic team at The Tower and our amazing customers, we're still here.

“Please continue to support your local independent cinema.”

The venue put out a plea for help last month after manager Fernando Pitāes left his role due to health reasons, resulting in the three staff members and a group of volunteers running the cinema.

The cinema opened in 2014 in the former St Columba's Church building and was officially opened in 2015 by Scotland's then culture minister, Fiona Hyslop.

Since 2020 the venue faced financial difficulties as the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to close their doors and the cost-of-living crisis left them with rising bills.
