A NEW theatre production inspired by Scotland's very own version of the sport of wrestling is heading to Helensburgh.

'Thrown' is written by Nat McCleary and heads to the Victoria Halls in July.

The National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) show is touring Scotland during the country's Highland Games season - having been inspired by the sport of Scottish backhold wrestling, a hugely popular feature of Highland Games events all over the country.

The all-female cast tells the story of Glasgow's most unlikely team, the five different women gathering in muddy fields of Highland Games to compete in the uniquely Scottish sport.

Describing the show, an NTS spokesperson said: "The pearls are off, influencer video posted, 'Gucci' bag from the Barras set aside as the bold beginners attempt to become a team and win the championship.

"But nothing will prepare them for the competition that could stop them taking home the trophy – each other.

"Can there be unity with diversity? Thrown gets to grips with identity and belonging in Scotland, challenging contemporary notions of Scottishness."

Scottish Backhold is a style of folk wrestling originating in Scotland and has long been a traditional test of strength and guile at Highland Games events - and Thrown aims to embody the physicality and passion at the heart of the sport.

The theatre company's "theatre without walls" taglines for Thrown are: "Sweat. Opposition. Negotiation. Hold on Tight."

Staring Efè Agwele, Maureen Carr, Lesley Hart, Chloe-Ann Tylor and Adiza Shardow, Thrown is about "belonging", said writer Nat.

"As someone who wrestles with identity," she said, "backhold wrestling seemed to be the perfect conduit for exploring a sense of self, belonging, notions of Scottishness and their place on a personal and national level at this moment in time.

"Audiences can expect a show that is honest, funny, and unapologetic.”

The writer is known to TV sudiences as an actor who starred in Jamie Johnson, Guilt, Mayflies and The Control Room.

This is her debut theatre production as a playwright.

Thrown will be at the Victoria Halls on July 8 at 7.30pm. Tickets will be on sale from www.nationaltheatrescotland.com/ soon.
