A CARDROSS musician has spoken of his delight at being billed to appear at a new Scottish trad music festival in Glasgow this summer.
Ryan Young is one of a number of acts set to play at The Reeling at Rouken Glen Park, which will take place on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11.
The fiddle player makes up part of Sunday’s line-up, featuring on second stage – named ‘A’ Choille’ after the Gaelic for ‘the wood’.
The stage is said to be set in a secluded woodland area, and organisers say it will see ‘secret sets’ from special guests across the weekend and a daily showcase by Fèis Phàislig – an traditional arts organisation based in Paisley.
Ryan is pleased to see trad music on the up, and says it is hitting new levels across the country.
He said: “Trad gigs are selling out very quickly and being really well attended.
“It’s often thought of as being music for an older generation, but there’s such a surge of young people going to stuff now.
“It’s amazing to be part of something like The Reeling, where there’s going to be a huge audience of younger people at it as well.
“Other than Celtic Connections, there’s not normally a folk festival in Glasgow, so it’s a special thing to be part.
“The stage they’ve added has been called a secret woodland stage, so I think it’ll really nice and more acoustic.”
The festival will see top trad acts such as Breabach, Talisk, Valtos, Heron Valley, Siobhan Miller, and Skerryvore take to the main stage over the two days.
Ryan will be joined on A’Choille by Beth Malcolm, Hector Shaw, Katie McFarlane, and Megan Henderson.
He is also looking forward to seeing some of his own favourite acts perform at the event.
Ryan added: “The person accompanying me on guitar is a guy called David Foley - his band Rura are also playing.
“They’re good friends of mine, so I always look forward to seeing them playing. I love Rachel Sermanni too, I think she’s brilliant.”
In the lead up to the festival, Ryan will be finishing off his second album, which is currently being mixed in the United States by four-time Grammy award-winning producer Jesse Lewis.
He also has shows lined up in Belgium, Czech Republic, and Germany, and will embark on six-week tours of both the US and Canada, and Australia later this year.
Tickets for The Reeling are on sale now, and can be found here.
