The Babcock 10K Series has been selected to host Scottish 10K Championships for the first time in its history.
Scottish Athletics have awarded the duties to the organisers who operate Helensburgh’s annual 10K race, with the event set to take place at the Babcock Shettleston 10K on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at Glasgow Green.
As well as men’s and women’s races, there will also be wheelchair events. Scottish Athletics championship medals will be contested, and more than £6,000 in cash and Start Fitness vouchers will be up for grabs.
Kevin Johnson, Babcock Series chairman, said: “The Scottish Championships will undoubtedly strengthen the front end of the race and ensure greater strength and depth in both the men’s and women’s races.
“We are also delighted to include wheelchair athletes at Shettleston for the first time.”
Shettleston race director John Mackay believes that Weynay Gebreselassie’s series record of 29 minutes and 32 seconds may be under threat, as well as Fionnuala Ross’ women’s record of 34 minutes and eight seconds.
The series’ Helensburgh race will be held on Thursday, May 4, with the Dumbarton instalment taking place on Thursday, May 25.
All finishers in each of the races will receive a unique commemorative medal and a goody bag containing an item of running merchandise.
There will also be prizes for leading individuals, teams, and age groups.
Each race is to be carried out on largely traffic-free courses, with Helensburgh’s benefitting from complete road closures, and the Shettleston and Dumbarton events taking place mainly on cycle paths.
Entries are now open at babcock10kseries.co.uk, with everyone from Olympians to beginners welcome.
Male athletes with a personal best inside 31 minutes and females faster than 36 minutes will receive free entry to the Babcock Shettleston event. Those who fall under these categories are asked to contact kevin.johnson@marvelus.co.uk.
